What Is This "New Style"? (Rules)

This style is based on the new 3 on 3, 3ICE format (watch here!). It is meant to simulate fast-paced, overtime hockey throughout the entire game. The rules minimize whistles (there are almost none) and maximize speed. Most teams will only have 9 skaters. All rules are similar to the normal IIHF rules except the following (stolen from 3ICE):
  1. We utilize the 3 on 3 overtime format as our full-time format; 3 skaters plus a goalie for each team (Overtime all the time, baby!)
  2. Games consist of two 11-minute halves with a running clock.
  3. No powerplays, instead we go straight to a jailbreak penalty shot. Players start from the blue line and the penalty shot taker starts from the center dot. As soon as the puck is touched, it’s free game!
  4. No overtime, instead we go to one-round shootouts until a winner is determined.
  5. Goalies can play the puck anywhere on the ice (Anything can happen)
  6. If the puck comes off the netting or anywhere else and is still on the ice surface, we keep playing.
  7. Intentional Icing is a penalty and results in a penalty shot. In other words, an attempt at a real hockey play that misses is fine, but no taking the heat out of a hot kitchen. And if a player shoots on an empty net from behind center ice and misses, that too is a penalty shot.
  8. Like basketball’s “Half Court Rule”, if the offensive team brings the puck back out of the offensive zone and across the center ice line without interference from the other team, that is a turnover. The whistle is blown and the offending player must stop touching the puck until the other team has had a chance to touch it first.
  9. We don’t have a big, blue 3-point arc-looking area around the goal like in the official 3ICE, so we will use the hashmarks. Once a goalie makes a clear save, play is paused and the goalie resets play. But wait… the opponent must be above the hashmarks as he does so. No hovering or hacking at the goalies or sneaking up behind him while he restarts.

  8. Upon entering the attacking zone by crossing over the blue line, the zone expands back to the red line but, like basketball’s “Half Court Rule”, if the offensive team brings the puck back out of the offensive zone and across the center ice line without interference from the other team, that is a turnover. The whistle is blown and the offending player must stop touching the puck until the other team has had a chance to touch it first.
